Best Tips for Whale Shark Encounters on Koh Tao

Posted on by james

If you’re dreaming of swimming with the majestic whale sharks, Koh Tao is one of the best places to make that dream a reality. The Thai Gulf is a natural nursery for these gentle giants, providing a safe haven where they can grow up away from larger predators. The whale sharks that you’ll encounter here are typically between 2 and 5 meters long—still impressive, but much smaller than the 12-meter giants they can become!

When and Where to Spot Whale Sharks

Whale sharks can be seen year-round in the waters around Koh Tao, but the best times to increase your chances are during March and April, and again around September and October. During these periods, the conditions are ideal, and sightings become more frequent. However, don’t be discouraged if you’re visiting outside these peak times—these gentle giants can make an appearance at any time!

As for the best dive sites, Chumphon Pinnacle, Southwest Pinnacle, and Sail Rock are your go-to spots for whale shark sightings. These locations are hotspots because they offer the deep, nutrient-rich waters that whale sharks love. But remember, on Koh Tao, you’re never too far from a whale shark—sightings have been reported at most dive sites around the island.

Respectful Whale Shark Encounters

When you do encounter a whale shark, it’s important to remember that you’re visiting their home. To ensure a positive experience for both you and the shark, there are a few guidelines to keep in mind.

First and foremost, relax! Whale sharks are curious creatures and are more likely to approach you if you’re calm and not making sudden movements. Never chase after them—this can be stressful for the sharks and might cut your encounter short. Instead, swim alongside them, always showing them your side rather than facing them head-on. This non-threatening posture often encourages them to come closer and maybe even hang out with you for a while.

It’s also crucial to avoid using strobes or flash photography. These can be disorienting and uncomfortable for the sharks. Natural light is best for capturing the moment, and it ensures that the shark remains at ease.

Finally, resist the urge to bang on your tank to get the shark’s attention. While it might seem like a good way to grab their interest, it has been proven to actually deter them. Keeping the environment quiet and serene is key to a successful encounter.
